Australia Awards Scholarships announced

The Australian Government is delighted to be able to offer 124 scholarships for Papua New Guineans to study in Australia 2016.

These places in some of the world’s top universities will offer Papua New Guineans an opportunity to obtain an Australian qualification that will equip them with the skills and knowledge to actively contribute to the development of PNG.

Acting Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Ms Bronte Moules, commented that more than half the awards were offered to women.

“Giving equal opportunities to women to study in Australia is an important step in ensuring equitable participation in the development of Papua New Guinea” Ms Moules said.

People living and working in the provinces were strongly represented among the prospective students, and eight awards were being offered to people with a disability.

“This is promising news for Papua New Guinea because Australia Awards are empowering people from different walks of life through education to make a difference in the future of this country,” Ms Moules said.

Scholarships are awarded in line with priority sectors agreed by both the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia which include health, education, governance and infrastructure.

Australia Awards promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia and PNG and are part of Australia's commitment to providing education opportunities to improve living standards and stimulate economic growth.

Applications for Australia Awards Scholarships to study in Australia in 2017 will open in October 2015. Women, people living a disability and people living and working in the provinces are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Australia Awards - PNG Information Centre is equipped with institutional handbooks and internet access to help potential applicants research courses, seek assistance with their applications and to assist alumni to look for positions where they can apply their skills, knowledge and leadership abilities.

The centre is located in Port Tower, Hunter St, Port Moresby, and is open Monday-Friday 8.00am to 4.30pm.
