PNG Australia Alumni Association launches Autonomous Region of Bougainville Chapter

Australian High Commission representative Tim Bryson and PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA) President Dr Teatulohi Matainaho recently launched the inaugural Autonomous Region of Bougainville Chapter of the PNGAAA in Arawa.

“The new PNGAAA Chapter provides an opportunity for high-achieving Bougainvilleans who have studied in Australia to develop and maintain a network with other alumni across PNG”, Mr Bryson said.

The ARoB Chapter is part of an expanding PNG Australia alumni network, with chapters in Lae, Kokopo, Madang, Goroka, Manus and Enga. “The PNGAAA is a strong and growing group of Papua New Guineans from across the public service, private enterprise and civil society. Our Chapters are a crucial mechanism for these alumni to support grass roots development in the provinces.” Dr Matainaho said.

The ARoB Chapter will serve as a hub for information about Australia Awards scholarships and provide members with professional development training and access to a small grants program. The Australian Government supports the first year of PNGAAA membership for all awardees returning from an Australia Awards scholarship.

Since 2010, over 30 Bougainvilleans have studied in Australia. ARoB Chapter President Jezreel Ivomari welcomed the Australian Government’s assistance. “Through Australia Award scholarships, and establishment of this Chapter we can bring much needed training and grants to the region as well as identify and mentor the next generation of leaders.”

The PNGAAA was formed in 2006 to provide Papua New Guineans who have studied in Australia with a mechanism to use their knowledge and leadership skills to contribute to development in PNG. PNGAAA has over 600 members nationally and Chapters in seven provinces.

The PNGAAA is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Awards PNG Facility. To become a member or find out more about the PNGAAA email [email protected].
