Survivor Advocate Toolkit Launched

Efforts to promote justice for survivors of Family Sexual Violence in Papua New Guinea have taken a significant step forward with the launch of a new Survivor Advocate Toolkit early this month.

The toolkit consists of an A4 and A2 sized flipchart for community information sessions and a pocket-sized support card that contains contact details of relevant service providers.

Speaking at the launch, Secretary for Justice and Attorney General and Chairperson of the Family Sexual Violence Action Committee, Dr Lawrence Kalinoe said advocacy was an important tool to educate survivors and the public on the laws that deal with family and sexual violence and gender based issues.

“The onus now falls on the advocates who will be using this vital resource material to train more people to combat family and Sexual Violence and Gender based Violence,” said Dr Kalinoe.

Australian High Commission Counsellor for Law and Justice, Gina Wilson described the initiative to make justice more accessible to survivors of family and sexual violence, as ground breaking.

The toolkit was developed by the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (CIMC-FSVAC), supported by the Australian Government, in close consultation with the law and justice sector, civil society organisations and provincial representatives.

The CIMC-FSVAC will be holding trainings for survivor advocates, partners and support organisations across the country on the use of the toolkit to ensure more survivors can access justice.
