Australia supports City Mission’s expansion to Madang

City Mission officially launched its new youth program in Madang Province on 8 March 2018. The event featured a ground breaking ceremony at the Hululan Plantation outside of Madang, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony at Apex Hall in town.

The launch sees City Mission continue to expand beyond Port Moresby where it has operated for 25 years and Lae since 2004.

Present at the ground breaking at Hululan Plantation were Madang MP, Hon. Bryan Kramer, Founder of City Mission PNG, Larry George and Australian High Commission representative, Brendan Peace.

“The Australian Government is pleased to support City Mission’s expansion to Madang through its Youth Life Skills program for young men. This support is part of our broader commitment to supporting young Papua New Guineans to realise their ambitions and contribute to PNG’s long term development goals,” said Mr Peace.

Australia is partnering with Papua New Guinea to improve service delivery and provide economic opportunities for people in regional parts of the country.

The Australian Government has been a longstanding partner with City Mission, investing PGK10 million over 16 years to support its operations in Port Moresby, Lae and now in Madang. Last year alone, City Mission reached 886 young men in Port Moresby and Lae to help them break the cycle of street violence and crime.

The Life Skills program runs for 18 months and targets young men, including those who have experienced substance abuse and poverty. The training package includes basic literacy and numeracy skills, vocational training, counselling and mentoring.

The first 60 participants in Madang will learn basic literacy and numeracy skills, before advancing to vocational skills training and job placements.

In addition to its new office at Apex Hall and the youth program at Hululan Plantation, City Mission plans to open a safe house for vulnerable women and children, similar to Port Moresby’s Haus Ruth and Lae’s Haus Claire.

City Mission is a not for profit, philanthropic organisation dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, young men and children in Papua New Guinea.
