MR 070913 Message

Congratulatory message from the Australian High Commissioner to PNG

13 September 2007

Papua New Guinea’s 32nd Anniversary of Independence

On behalf of the Government and people of Australia, I would like to express my best wishes to the Government and people of Papua New Guinea on the occasion of your 32nd anniversary of Independence.

The relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea is deep and enduring. It is born of history and geography and covers the full range of bilateral interests with close links between the governments, businesses and peoples of our two countries.

The links between our people, including in the areas of education and sport, are particularly strong. This year we are proud to once again be supporting the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII match against the PNG Kumuls. This exciting sporting fixture was first held in 2005. It helps to strengthen friendships and also serves as a vehicle to send some important messages about the fight against HIV/AIDS and the importance of gender equality.

The recent launch of the Australia-Pacific Technical College in Port Moresby, which will provide complementary technical training to that which already exists in Papua New Guinea, is further evidence of our close ties.

I wish the Government, communities and people of Papua New Guinea a happy and memorable 32nd anniversary of Independence.

His Excellency Mr Chris Moraitis
Australian High Commissioner to PNG
