At a ceremony in Hela on 16 September, ground was broken on the redevelopment of the Kopiago Health Centre.
Around 27,000 people of Kopiago in Hela Province will benefit as the Centre is upgraded to a Level 3 Facility with the support of the Papua New Guinea – Australia Partnership.
The new Centre will include 18 acute care beds, Emergency Department, General Outpatients, Maternal and Child Health Clinics, Operating Theatre, 2 Delivery Rooms, X-Ray and Laboratory services, new medical equipment and 16 new staff houses and is expected to be complete in September 2021.
Australian High Commissioner Bruce Davis joined Hela Governor Philip Undialu, Minister for Migration and Border Security Petrus Thomas, Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations Alfred Manase and other officials at the ground breaking ceremony.
Speaking at the event, High Commissioner Davis reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting the Papua New Guinea Government’s vision to deliver high quality health services to all Papua New Guineans, especially to the rural communities.
He said, “A healthy population will be able to achieve better educational outcomes, which will lead to happier communities and a stronger economy.”
