Australia supports bridge repairs to improve safety for the Kokoda Track region

Major repairs to the Vesulogo Bridge near Sogeri, Central Province have been completed. The work included a heavy gauge steel surface, which replaced dilapidated timber that was no longer safe to use.

The project, supported by the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership, involved locals throughout all stages, including construction and traffic control to manage minor road delays. Six local labourers were also trained in new steel working techniques.

Amongst those engaged as traffic controllers was Hiri District Ward 10 Councillor Helen Weana, who said she was pleased that the bridge was fixed.

“Parts of the bridge burned a few months ago,” she said.

“I am happy that the bridge is fixed for the local communities of the area.”

The solid steel structure replaces the old timber bridge and will be in place for many years to come.

Over the past 10 years, the bridge’s timber surface had suffered wood rot, broken planks and missing pieces. The new steel panels ensure even heavy vehicles can safely cross the Vesulogo River. Although the Kokoda Track has been closed to tourists due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the bridge will provide essential and safe access once the Track reopens.

The bridge construction was supported by the Kokoda Initiative – a partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia to enhance the quality of life for communities along the Track, protect the environment and cultural values, and keep the track open and well managed.
