Assistant Program Manager, Public Affairs

AusAID PNG is responsible for the delivery of the Australian Aid program to PNG by assisting the PNG Government to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. The PNG program is one of Australia’s largest aid programs, providing approximately A$491.7 million for 2012-13.

About the role
Under general direction, the Assistant Program Manager, Public Affairs will support the First Secretary Public Affairs to implement the AusAID PNG Communication and Public Diplomacy Strategy. The Assistant Program Manager, Public Affairs will be responsible for identifying and managing opportunities to promote Australia’s development partnership with PNG, producing high quality public affairs products, event planning and managing and research and production of promotional material.

The key responsibilities for this position are:

  • Linking with the AusAID PNG Communication and Public Diplomacy Strategy, develop and implement individual communication project plans to promote the work of AusAID in PNG;
  • Identifying and managing opportunities to promote the aid program in PNG;
  • Draft media releases, talking points, speeches and other written material;
  • Build and manage communication networks within AusAID and with other partner organisations and stakeholders;
  • Event planning and management and research and produce promotional material;
  • Film & edit video, record audio and take photographs to demonstrate the work of AusAID in PNG;
  • Liaising with the PNG media; and
  • Monitor media, identify potential issues and advise key stakeholders.

Required Skills and Qualifications
 

  • Demonstrated experience in Public Affairs is required or relevant qualifications in journalism and communications is desirable.
  • Creative writing ability to produce internal and external communications;
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise in a busy work environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including letter and report writing;
  • Ability to accept responsibility and display creative initiative;
  • Effective track record in coordinating and generating substantial positive news media, feature stories and carious online media placement;
  • Ability to work as part of a team; and
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
