Australia continues support for annual PNG Update at University of Papua New Guinea

The Australian Government is pleased to support the annual PNG Update, an integral forum bringing together academics, policy makers and practitioners for mutual learning and sharing of ideas about Papua New Guinea, its challenges and opportunities; its past, present and future.

The event is jointly organised by the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Business and Public Policy and the Australian National University (ANU)  Development Policy Centre, and funded through the PNG-Australia Partnership.

This forum, a cornerstone of the ANU-UPNG partnership, demonstrates  Australia’s investment in training future leaders and strengthening the quality of research to support policy makers to make evidence-based, inclusive, and well-informed policy decisions.

"A key aspect of Australia's development program is investing in locally led solutions and building respectful partnerships. It means listening and understanding what it is that Papua New Guinea needs and to think about how best Australia can support that,” said Australian High Commissioner to PNG, H.E Jon Philp.

In the last year alone, an impressive cohort of over 750 UPNG students have been taught by three ANU lecturers and four ANU-trained lecturers in UPNG’s undergraduate and post graduate courses in economics and public policy. These students will contribute their skills and knowledge to government, non-profit organisations, academia, and private industry across the country, furthering the development and progress of Papua New Guinea.

To strengthen the availability of economic data in PNG, the ANU-UPNG partnership offers a central location of high quality, reliable and timely data dating back to PNG’s independence on The PNG databases.

A true testament to collaborative research between UPNG and ANU, the eleventh PNG Update was held at the University of Papua New Guinea, Waigani campus from 17–18 August 2023.
