Arrival of Australia’s New High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, 08 May 2025

Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Mr Ewen McDonald, arrived in Port Moresby on 7 May 2025 to commence his appointment.

On 8 May, Mr McDonald met with Prime Minister James Marape and presented his letter of introduction.

Mr McDonald is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently High Commissioner to Fiji.

Mr McDonald has had a previous posting as Australia's High Commissioner to New Zealand with accreditation to the Cook Islands and Niue.

Domestically in Australia, Mr McDonald has served as Deputy Secretary Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and as Head of Office of the Pacific.

He has also served as Deputy Director General of the former Australian Agency for International Development, and as Deputy Secretary within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. Mr McDonald will also continue his role as Australia’s Special Envoy for the Pacific and Regional Affairs.
