As the world marks World Autism Day, the Gerehu Inclusive Education Resource Centre (IERC) in Port Moresby is taking a stand to create awareness and provide support for children with autism and their families.
Gerehu IERC Coordinator, Ms Belinda Sausi, highlighted the importance of understanding autism and adopting a supportive environment for children with special needs.
"Our approach is centred around understanding each child's sensory needs, cognitive development, and social behaviour. Through careful observation and tailored strategies, we create an environment where children can connect, learn, and grow," said Ms Sausi.
Ms Sausia explained that parents and guardians play a crucial role in the journey of a child with disability. Many parents of children with autism at Gerehu IERC actively participate in classroom routines, helping their children with daily tasks such as eating and using the restroom.
In commemorating World Autism Day, Ms Sausi encouraged families who suspect their child may have autism to seek help from IERCs and hospitals. "Early identification and intervention are key. We provide support to help parents understand the signs and access the right resources," she said.
Gerehu IERC is committed to empowering children with autism and helping them transition into mainstream education. Many students from the centre have successfully enrolled in schools with ongoing teacher follow-ups to ensure their smooth integration.
"For World Autism Day, our message is simple: Every child is unique. If you notice signs of autism in your child, seek support early. There is help available, and together, we can create an inclusive society where every child thrives.”
