From Radio Waves to Digital Shores: 20 Years of PNG Australia Media Development Initiative, 18 July 2025

The Australian Government has marked a significant milestone in its media partnership with Papua New Guinea (PNG) — the 20th anniversary of the Media Development Initiative (MDI).

The event in Port Moresby brought together media professionals, government representatives, and community leaders to reflect on two decades of collaboration in PNG’s media sector. Themed “From Radio Waves to Digital Shores,” the event highlighted the transformative journey of partnership between PNG and Australia and its enduring impact on journalism and media development.

MDI was established as a capacity-building initiative between PNG and Australia’s national broadcasters. Jo Elsom of ABC International Development noted the strong institutional relationship between NBC and ABC—built on a shared public service mandate to serve people and uphold the public interest—was the foundation for the initiative’s creation.

While the institutional bond remains strong, MDI has evolved over the past 20 years into a broad and inclusive partnership. It now works with a wide range of media organisations, including mainstream, church-based broadcasters and community-driven organisations. Today, MDI continues to strengthen media capacity, enhance content production, and promote a culture of ethical, independent journalism underpinned by shared values.

Speaking at the event, Neville Choi the President of the Media Council of PNG acknowledged MDI’s role not only in providing technological and equipment support but also in fostering a safe environment for journalists to speak openly and rebuild confidence in their profession.

Penny Morton, Minister Counsellor at the Australian High Commission, thanked all partners for their trust and collaboration with Australia, emphasising the importance of mutual respect and partnerships.

“When we listen to each other, respect each other, and work together, we can achieve extraordinary things.” Morton said.

“We are proud to walk with you—Yumi Stap Wantaim—as we celebrate PNG’s 50th anniversary of independence and look ahead to the future.”
