Papua New Guinea plays host to Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, 29 July 2025

Elements of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, Australia’s largest and most advanced bilateral military exercise, are currently being held in Papua New Guinea.

2025 marks the first time the exercise is extending outside of Australia to include training activities here in Papua New Guinea, reflecting the deepening defence cooperation between our nations and our shared commitment to regional security.

With force integration elements already having commenced on 16 July 2025, the exercise is now moving closer to its tactical phase with service men and women from Australia, the United States and Papua New Guinea’s defence forces commencing activities in Wewak and Lae.

Over the next week, participating forces will conduct complex training, including a Joint Personnel Recovery activity and air, land, and maritime manoeuvres.

Papua New Guinea’s hosting of Talisman Sabre activities reflects its growing capability and commitment as a defence partner, working alongside TS25 partner nations to enhance interoperability and readiness.

Now in its 11th iteration, Talisman Sabre brings together more than 40,000 military personnel from across 19 partner nations, including Papua New Guinea.

Alongside Australia and the United States, participating nations include Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and the United Kingdom. Malaysia and Vietnam are attending as observers.

Ends.
