Inoculating a nation: Australia’s continued support to help boost immunisation coverage, 11 August 2025

Australia is proud to support Papua New Guinea (PNG)’s aspirations for a thriving and prosperous nation where health and wellbeing are enjoyed by all, as outlined in PNG’s National Health Plan 2021-2030.

We believe that every child deserves the best start in life. We know that vaccinations play a central role in protecting against serious diseases such as polio as well as measles, whooping cough, and others.

That’s why we are proud to support ongoing efforts to boost vaccination rates across the country, especially for children in the most hard-to-reach areas.

But when new health threats emerge, the PNG-Australia Partnership stands ready to provide further support – side by side, step by step.

When the news of the vaccine-derived polio outbreak came to light earlier in the year, the Australian Government responded swiftly, making an immediate contribution of K13.5 million to support Papua New Guinea’s response through the World Health Organization.

Working closely with the National Department of Health, Provincial Health Authorities, and many technical and development partners, our support will help protect an estimated three million children nationwide and reduce the risk of future polio outbreaks, while further boosting routine childhood immunisation coverage.

At the launch of the national immunisation campaign in Port Moresby this morning, representatives from the Australian Government were honoured to pay tribute to the frontline health workers who will be travelling to every corner of this country to ensure children can be protected.

In the lead up the 50th anniversary of PNG’s Independence, there can be no better gift than supporting the good health of the next generation.
