2025 PNG Update: 2,000 expected over two days, 21 August 2025

The annual PNG Update, proudly supported by the Australian Government, is Papua New Guinea’s premier forum for discussion and analysis of the country’s social and economic development.

Since its inception 12 years ago, the PNG Update jointly organised by the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Business and Public Policy, and the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy, has grown rapidly in size and influence to become PNG’s premier research event.

In the year of PNG’s Golden Jubilee, organisers expect the event to attract more policymakers, business leaders, researchers, and students than ever before.

Between 21-22 August, over 2,000 people are expected to attend the activities at the University of Papua New Guinea’s Waigani campus.

“The PNG Update demonstrates Australia’s ongoing commitment to supporting Papua New Guinea’s economic development through evidence-based policymaking, inclusive dialogue, and respect for local expertise,” said Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea and Special Envoy for the Pacific and Regional Affairs,” Mr Ewen McDonald.

“It exemplifies our focus on working in genuine partnership, listening to Papua New Guinean voices, and investing in institutions and people who are shaping the nation’s future.’’

“The 2025 PNG Update theme of Papua New Guinea at 50: past, present and future resonates with Australia’s campaign to celebrate Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary – Yumi Stap Wantaim – which reflects on a shared history between Australia and PNG that has been side by side and looks forward to a shared future that we will embrace step by step.”

Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape and Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Ewen McDonald share a light moment at the 2025 ANU-UPNG PNG Update.
