Koroba District receives essential health services, 08 September 2025

Koroba-Lake Kopiago district in Hela Province will soon have a new district hospital following a recent groundbreaking ceremony.

The ceremony was witnessed by provincial and local leaders, government representatives, key development partners, and the local community and marks the first phase of construction of the facility, that will be built on the existing site of the district hospital with additional land acquired for the expansion.

Once complete, the hospital will provide primary and secondary health services such as general adult medicine, paediatrics, maternal and child health, surgical services, in-patient and outpatient care, mental health, obstetrics and gynecology, pharmaceutical and dental services, medical imaging, and emergency care.

The facility will include a Family Support Centre, kitchen and laundry facilities, guardians’ amenities, a mortuary, a generator/incinerator block, and new staff houses.

This will be the fourth district hospital to be constructed through a partnership between the Governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea, and the Asian Development Bank.

Good health is essential for building strong and resilient communities. Australia is committed to supporting the Government of PNG’s vision to bring essential health services closer to peoples’ homes.
