Australia supports PNG to drive improvement in health systems, 09 January 2026

The Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM) and the PNG National Department of Health have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to drive improvement in healthcare systems in PNG.

The MOU signed at the annual Asia-Pacific Health Leadership Congress in Darwin, establishes a collaborative partnership aimed at strengthening health leadership capacity across PNG, supporting Papua New Guinean health leaders to engage with regional and international peers, and progressing the establishment of an official PNG branch of ACHSM.

The Australian Government supported delegates to attend the Congress and witnessed the signing of the MOU, providing them with an invaluable platform for professional networking, idea exchange and collaboration to strengthen healthcare systems.

Ms. Margareth Samei of the National Department of Health said it was a privilege to be there.

‘‘It was a deeply rewarding experience that the Australian Government provided us with the opportunity to learn, connect and contribute towards health leadership in PNG and the wider Pacific region,’’ said Ms Samei.

The Congress highlighted shared challenges faced by remote and rural communities, including those across PNG provinces, and reinforced the commitment to ensure no one is left behind in healthcare access and service quality.
