The PNG–Australia Partnership continues to support local leadership, practical skills and the long-term development priorities shaped by Bougainvilleans themselves.
From study to service, members of the PNG Australia Alumni Association (PNGAAA) Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ARoB) Chapter are making real contributions to the region’s development, and new opportunities are now open for the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
The Australian Development Assistance Office in Buka highlighted this during an Australia Day celebration with more than 30 members in attendance.
A key focus of the event was the announcement that applications for the 2027 Australia Awards Scholarships were open, offering study opportunities in Australia in priority areas for Papua New Guinea and Bougainville. This includes Public Sector Priority Skills Scholarships for staff from key PNG agencies, including the Autonomous Bougainville Government.
First Secretary, Ms Greer Smith, welcomed guests and acknowledged the leadership of alumni in shaping Bougainville’s future.
“We continue to see wonderful alumni like yourselves leading meaningful change across the whole region. I've seen firsthand your strength, your commitment, and the way you turn knowledge into real outcomes, whether through policy, service delivery, or local entrepreneurship, and it's inspiring.” Ms Smith said.
PNGAAA ARoB Chapter President, Ms Stella Wainetti, said the alumni network remains a powerful force for positive change.
“As alumni, you know that we have a responsibility to share our knowledge generously. Also support emerging professionals through the Australia Awards, promote ethical leadership, and strengthen institutions that serve our people. This is especially important for the Pacific context and our culture, where leadership is grounded in values, service, and cultural respect,” she said.
The event also highlighted the Alumni Grants Scheme, which supports community driven initiatives across Bougainville and opens for applications in March 2026.
Applications for Australia Awards scholarships close 30 April 2026. Visit www.australiaawardspng.org for more information.
