Mobile journalism kits boost local radio
Journalists at Laif FM in Wewak are transforming the way they report news and share stories, thanks to new mobile journalism kits and practical training delivered through the PNG-Australia Partnership’s Media Development Initiative (MDI).
For more than 20 years, MDI has partnered with Papua New Guinea’s media organisations to strengthen skills, improve access to essential tools, and build the capacity needed to deliver high quality, community focused journalism.
The recent presentation of mobile journalism (“MoJo”) kits to Laif FM is helping reporters capture, edit, and share stories more quickly and effectively as events unfold.
Laif FM Marketing and Editing Team Leader Ms Julie Korikoria said that the new MoJo kits and training have helped the team produce more compelling stories while also contributing to the radio station’s sustainability.
“The MoJo kit really improved the quality of photos and videos I took, compared to before when I didn’t have good equipment. After the training we used the MoJo kit to do a live-a-thon fundraising drive for Laif FM on Facebook and that increased our followers both on the radio’s Facebook page and my personal page as well. People responded to our stories and posts when they saw quality photos and videos posted,” said Ms Korikora.
With an audience that spans East Sepik, Madang, and Enga, Laif FM plays an important role in connecting communities with timely, reliable, and relevant information. The station also benefited from MDI’s Content Fund, which supports local media outlets to produce impactful stories that resonate with their audiences.
These investments are helping PNG journalists strengthen their reporting, expand audience reach, and build more resilient and sustainable media organisations.
Australia is proud to support this long-standing partnership to strengthen Papua New Guinea’s media sector.
