Australian Parliamentarians meet PNG’s emerging women leaders in Port Moresby

A delegation of visiting Australian Parliamentarians met with a group of emerging women leaders in Papua New Guinea on 16 February, gaining firsthand insight into the aspirations of women preparing to step into political leadership roles.

Hosted in Port Moresby by Australia’s PNG Women Lead program, in partnership with Save the Children’s Regional Leadership Initiative, the event brought together the Australian MPs – Ms Ash Ambihaipahar MP, Ms Fiona Boyd Phillips MP, Ms Libby Coker MP, Mr Sam Birrell MP and Ms Susan Templeman MP – and PNG women leaders for open and constructive dialogue on leadership, public life, and the opportunities and challenges women face in politics.

The gathering highlighted the importance of deepening people‑to‑people connections between Papua New Guinea and Australia. Discussions emphasised how shared experiences and diverse perspectives on women’s leadership strengthen mutual understanding and help build more collaborative relationships between the two countries.

The event formed part of the Australian Parliamentarians’ week‑long visit to PNG, during which the delegation is meeting local leaders, experiencing PNG’s vibrant cultural hospitality, and gaining a deeper appreciation of the country’s development priorities and the impact of Australia’s support under the PNG–Australia Partnership.
