PNG Law and Justice Sector plans for 2026
Papua New Guinea’s law and justice leaders have taken an important step toward improving safety and justice services across the country, with the Law and Justice Sector Secretariat’s Technical Working Group meeting to discuss the sector’s plans for 2026.
Supported by the Australia–Papua New Guinea Law and Justice Partnership, the workshop brought together key agencies including the Department of Justice and Attorney General, Office of the Public Prosecutor, the National Judicial Staff Services, Correctional Services, and the Royal PNG Constabulary.
The Technical Working Group serves as the advisory forum to the law and justice sector’s National Coordinating Mechanism. Participants focused on practical solutions to strengthen sector coordination, enhance the collection and use of information, and boost engagement and service provision at the provincial level. Across the law and justice sector, Australia’s support is guided by a simple principle: To support PNG institutions to lead.
Australia is proud to support the sector - to improve access to justice, strengthen frontline services and support safer communities.
Technical Working Group Chairman Mr Stanley Raka noted the enduring partnership and support by the Government of Australia for the PNG Law and Justice sector and stated that the workshop had renewed the sector’s focus.
“This week has helped us as a sector reconnect and reset. We now have clearer priorities and stronger partnerships to guide our work for the year ahead,” he said.
With renewed momentum, agencies are now preparing concrete steps to implement improved justice services. Australia, through the Australia–PNG Law and Justice Partnership will continue supporting the sector’s ongoing coordination, planning, and delivery of safer, more effective justice outcomes across the country.
