Strengthening the role of research and data in PNG
Supported by the Australian Government and working in close partnership with the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG), the International Food Policy Research Institute has formally opened its PNG office under the Papua New Guinea Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Policy Support Program (PNG AFNP).
Through the PNG AFNP, the International Food Policy Research Institute will advance PNG’s strategy for economic growth and transformation by delivering data‑driven policy analysis, building local capability, and fostering partnerships that strengthen evidence‑based policy dialogue.
The two‑day launch event opened with the official office inauguration and initial research presentations, bringing together senior government officials, development partners, and researchers. Participants convened to examine new evidence related to economic resilience, agricultural productivity, and household wellbeing.
Keynote speakers included Department of Agriculture and Livestock Secretary Mr. Sergie Bang; Deputy Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Mr. Michael Kumung; and representatives from the Australian High Commission and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
Establishing the International Food Policy Research Institute’s presence in PNG reinforces Australia’s long‑term commitment to supporting evidence‑based policy, agricultural transformation, and inclusive economic growth. It also reflects a shared dedication among partners to elevating the role of research and data in shaping national development priorities.
