Momentum is building on the construction of Papua New Guinea’s Centre for Eye Health.
Located on the Port Moresby General Hospital grounds, the Centre for Eye Health will increase the availability of people-centred eye care for communities and improve training for eye health workers, in line with the PNG National Eye Health Plan (2024-2029).
Australian MPs visited the site in February and observed the significant progress, with the Centre on track to open before the end of 2026.
Australia has provided PGK7.4 million to support the equipment and fit-out needs of the Centre, an investment that will significantly expand access to quality eye care for people impacted by avoidable blindness and vision impairment across the country.
Australia is pleased to support this initiative that is a partnership between the Governments of PNG and New Zealand, National Department of Health, The University of PNG School of Medicine and Health Science, and The Fred Hollows Foundation.
With Papua New Guinea having one of the highest rates of eye health issues in the Pacific, this centre will provide hope for thousands of people in the rural and remote communities where access to these services is difficult.
