The Australian Government is supporting the PNG Correctional Service (PNGCS) with a digital weapons and ammunition management system called ArmsTracker.
ArmsTracker is a leading digital recordkeeping system designed to improve management and oversight of weapons and ammunition across their facilities.
Officers from the PNGCS recently received programmed laptops and training on the use of ArmsTracker ahead of the system coming online.
The training was conducted by the Centre for Armed Violence Reduction (CAVR) and covered important elements of weapons management, including standardised entry of firearms and ammunition in the system, accurate recording of firearms transfers, as well as reporting, oversight, and auditing obligations, and practical issues in weapons management.
With the newly acquired skills and knowledge, officers can now use the digital weapons and ammunition management system in their armouries to help improve weapons management capability of PNGCS going forward.
This system is part of a suite of initiatives being delivered with Australian Government support, aiming to assist PNG Correctional Services in preventing weapons and ammunition diversion through establishing high standards of armoury management.
The adoption of this system reflects a shared commitment to building a more secure future and demonstrates Australia’s support for PNG’s internal security priorities under the Australia-Papua New Guinea Bilateral Security Agreement.
