Friday 17 April marked an historic milestone in the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea with PNG completing its domestic processes for the entry into force of the PNG–Australia Mutual Defence Treaty, also known as the Pukpuk Treaty.
The Treaty builds on a partnership established over decades of shared history, close cooperation, and mutual trust.
It strengthens the longstanding security relationship between the two countries and reflects a shared commitment to support one another and safeguard national sovereignty. Australia’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea and Special Envoy for Pacific Affairs, Mr Ewen McDonald – who also witnessed the signing – said:
“The signing by Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko is an historic moment and another significant step forward in an already strong and enduring partnership. Our nations share a long and proud history of partnership, and the Pukpuk Treaty reflects our commitment to each other and as allies to a region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous,” he said.
Australia and Papua New Guinea have worked side by side on defence and security for many years. Our Alliance provides a clear framework to deepen that cooperation, strengthen coordination between our defence forces, and respond together to emerging security challenges in the region.
The Pukpuk Treaty makes Papua New Guinea our newest ally – the first in over 70 years – and highlights the enduring partnership between our two nations, reinforcing our shared commitment to peace, stability, and security in the Pacific.
