Marking World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April, women are taking the lead in promoting a strong safety culture at Total Waste Management’s (TWM) Resource Recovery Centre construction site on the outskirts of Port Moresby.
With construction on site surpassing 17,000 injury-free work hours, the project highlights the importance of high safety standards across all worksites and the positive role of women in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
The project is supported through Australia`s Incentive Fund. TWM`s Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environment (QHSSE) Officer, Ms Gerarda Mark, and Incentive Fund Infrastructure Project Manager, Ms Scambi Okuk, are working closely with construction teams to ensure workers can carry out their jobs safely.
As the QHSSE Officer, Ms Mark is focused on embedding safe work practices across the site, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
“The main objective is ensuring we complete this project with nil incidents, so no lost time injuries, ensuring everyone gets through the project safely,” she said.
Ms Mark and Ms Okuk are leading a strong safety culture across the project site that requires all workers – from site managers to construction crews – to contribute to a safe workplace.
“It’s not just the safety officer’s job or the supervisor’s job – everyone is responsible for safety, regardless of whether you work on the construction site or you work in an office, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make the workplace a safer place to work in,” said Ms Okuk.
The Resource Recovery Centre is the first facility of its kind in Papua New Guinea and will process up to 40,000 tonnes of waste each year into usable materials.
The project brings together Papua New Guinean professionals and Australian-supported expertise, working side by side to deliver infrastructure that meets high safety standards.
