Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting transparency and strengthening accountability in the management of Papua New Guinea’s natural resources through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Papua New Guinea Resource Governance Coalition (PNGRGC).
Signed in April in Port Moresby, the MoU will support PNGRGC’s operations from 2026 to 2028, enabling the coalition to enhance its role as a leading civil society voice in the extractives sector.
The partnership will support PNGRGC to strengthen its organisational capacity, expand engagement at the subnational level, and progress implementation of its strategic roadmap. This contributes to shared efforts to promote inclusive, transparent and sustainable management of Papua New Guinea’s resource sector, and the impacts for the communities living in extractive provinces.
PNGRGC President, Ms Arianne Kassman, welcomed the renewed partnership.
“This partnership is a vital step toward ensuring that resource governance is not just transparent, but inclusive of the communities whose lives are most impacted by the extractive sector,” Ms Kassman said. “Our aim is to uphold PNG's National Goal of Equality and Participation and ensure that the stewardship of our resources secures a fair and sustainable future for generations to come.”
Stronger and more inclusive governance of the extractive industries can drive sustainable economic growth, while ensuring revenues are managed responsibly and deliver tangible development outcomes.
