Women at Bomana Correctional Centre are the first to benefit from a new program improving access to menstrual health support in correctional facilities across Papua New Guinea.
The program is delivered by QueenPads in partnership with Papua New Guinea Correctional Services.
Funded by an Australian Government grant through the Community Justice Fund under the Australia–Papua New Guinea Law and Justice Partnership, the program will train female inmates and Correctional Services staff in menstrual health management and provide reusable menstrual kits (‘Queen Kits’).
Founder of QueenPads, Ms Anne-Shirley Korave, said the program is helping improve both access and dignity for women.
“For many women, especially in correctional settings, menstrual products are simply not available,” said Ms Korave.
“Through this program, we are providing practical support that builds confidence, preserves dignity and helps break down stigma around menstruation.”
This initiative expands on QueenPads’ current work to improve access to menstrual products and awareness across Papua New Guinea.
Following this launch in Bomana, it will reach women in 15 additional correctional facilities across PNG, addressing a key barrier that affects women’s dignity and wellbeing.
PNG Correctional Services Acting Deputy Commissioner Corporate Affairs, Francesca Marenge said the initiative is an important step in improving support for women in custody.
“By improving access to affordable, reuseable and washable menstrual products, we are enabling women in custody to participate more fully in daily activities and maintain dignity,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Marenge said.
“With support from Australia and by working with local partners like QueenPads, we can support women more effectively during their time in custody.”
The initiative reflects a shared commitment under the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership to strengthening inclusive justice systems.
The Australia PNG Law and Justice Partnership is a PNG law and justice sector-led initiative, with programs prioritised through the National Coordinating Mechanism and delivered in partnership with sector agencies.
Australia is proud to support this locally led approach to improve dignity, support rehabilitation, and contribute to a more inclusive and responsive justice system.
