An initiative under the PNG-Australia Partnership with the East Sepik Provincial Administration has improved access to safe, reliable drinking water in communities.
A total of 66 water catchment tanks have been installed across 18 locations in the province, including 15 local markets and three schools. Together, these tanks provide nearly 600,000 litres of water to an estimated 15,000 people.
The initiative forms part of a community-led program where provinces identify and plan development projects based on local priorities.
At Maur Community Market on Wewak’s east coast – where four 9000 litre tanks have been installed alongside a market structure – stakeholders and community members shared how the new facilities are supporting daily markets and boosting livelihoods.
Access to safe, reliable drinking water has improved the market experience for vendors and customers, leading to increased foot traffic and higher sales.
Stallholders, particularly women, reported using their additional income to support household needs, pay school fees, and reinvest in their businesses.
Improved access to water has also strengthened hygiene practices, enabling regular handwashing and safer handling of produce.
Speaking on behalf of the Maur community, Ward member Mr Canute Faripu said “this facility meets a real community need and reflects the strong friendship between our communities and the Australian Government.”
At St Therese Yarapos Primary School, now the proud owner of two 9,000-litre water tanks and a large structure with a roof to collect the water, Caretaker Head Teacher Ms Christine Hapmavi said the impact has been significant.
“The new water facility has made a real difference for our school. Our students now have reliable access to drinking water and can stay for full-day classes. It helps them to stay healthy and focused throughout the school day” Mr Hapmavi said.
Through community-led projects such as these, the PNG–Australia Partnership builds on the long-standing relationship between the two countries to deliver sustainable, community-focused development.
