Papua New Guinea’s Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) has taken an important step towards strengthening in-country diagnostic capacity for infectious diseases with the launch of its Strategic Plan 2025–2030.
CPHL is the country’s primary laboratory for diagnostics and public health surveillance, delivering critical testing for infectious diseases, including HIV and Tuberculosis (TB).
Endorsed by National Department of Health (NDoH) officials in the presence of representatives from the Australian High Commission, CPHL staff and key stakeholders, the Plan sets out a clear roadmap for a sustainable, high-performing national laboratory system.
It prioritises workforce development, equipping laboratory staff with the skills to respond rapidly and accurately to outbreaks, deliver reliable services, and leverage digital systems to meet international quality standards.
The Australian Government supports CPHL’s analytical and diagnostic capabilities through the deployment of laboratory scientists, procurement of diagnostic reagents, and specific support for TB testing.
Australia continues to support CPHL to lead PNG ’s diagnostic efforts and strengthen the quality and responsiveness of in-country testing.
Mr Ken Wai, Deputy Secretary of NDoH, highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in building national health resilience.
“This Strategic Plan will enable us to deliver high-quality, reliable diagnostics and respond more quickly to outbreaks. Papua New Guineans will benefit from faster results and earlier access to treatment.”
