Australia is supporting Papua New Guinea women researchers to elevate the overall research output of Papua New Guinea.
Twelve women researchers from Lae are travelling to Melbourne, Australia, to undertake advanced research training and mentorship at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) under an initiative aimed at strengthening women’s research leadership.
This is supported by the Australian Government through the PNG-Australia Partnership’s, “Strongim Risets Kapasiti Bilong Ol Meri” project.
Selected following intensive capacity-building workshops in Lae, the researchers will build on the foundational skills developed in research methodology, data analysis, academic and grant writing, leadership and evidence-based policy engagement.
The four-week placement will give participants the opportunity to work alongside Australian researchers and academic mentors while expanding their professional networks with leading Australian institutions.
Dr. Wilma Langa from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology said the opportunity would help open pathways for collaboration with other female researchers across PNG and Australia to advocate for inclusive policies.
“My research interest is in urban design and the urban informal sector,” she said.
“Through this training, I hope to explore ways I can contribute towards greater empowerment, inclusivity and equality for urban informal vendors, so they are recognised in relevant policies and are provided with safe and formal urban spaces to conduct market activities to sustain their urban livelihoods.”
The Lae participants represent the program’s second regional cohort following earlier workshops with female researchers in Port Moresby.
This initiative reflects Australia’s commitment to supporting women researchers, strengthen higher education partnerships and advance research capacity in PNG across sectors including agriculture, education, economics and community development.
