Australia is helping to strengthen leadership across the transport sector in Papua New Guinea.
31 officials from Papua New Guinea’s transport agencies have graduated with certificates in leadership and management through an Australian Government supported program.
Participants from Papua New Guinea’s National Airports Corporation, Accident Investigation Commission, Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Department of Transport completed the training across four learning blocks covering ethical leadership, risk management and communication.
The Executive Leadership Development Program is delivered by the Australian Government in partnership with the Government of PNG.
Presented by PNG training provider WINGS Education, the program helps participants to strengthen leadership skills, critical thinking and decision-making in complex working environments.
The course combines internationally recognised leadership competencies with content tailored to the PNG public sector.
The program also connected officials from different transport agencies, helping to strengthen professional networks and coordination across the sector. This supports better communication between agencies responsible for aviation, maritime, roads and transport policy.
Investigation Division - Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance at the PNG Accident Investigation Commission, Mr Judah Homingu, said the training had strengthened his leadership approach during aviation investigations.
“Aviation safety is built on getting every detail right. The training sharpened how I think under pressure and how I lead my team through complex investigations,” Mr Homingu said.
Team Leader Human Resource Services at the National Airports Corporation , Ms Elisheba Waram, , said the program had strengthened how she develops and supports her team.
"Managing people in a fast-paced aviation environment requires more than administrative skills, it requires leadership. This training gave me a framework to better support my team, plan for succession and build a workforce that is ready to meet the demands of a growing aviation sector," Ms Waram said.
The course is recognised by PNG’s National Training Council and aligns with the executive leadership and management framework for public servants.
PNG's transport agencies are building the leadership capability to meet the sector's growing demands.
