Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) are working side-by-side in East New Britain to protect local communities and strengthen regional security as part of the multinational activity, Operation Render Safe.
More than 80 years after the Pacific campaign of World War II, unexploded ordnance continues to pose risks to families, infrastructure and development in PNG. Operation Render Safe reflects the enduring partnership between Australia and PNG, which is one built on shared history, mutual respect, and a commitment to safety and stability in our region.
During the Second World War, PNG was a key battleground, and today the legacy of that conflict continues to affect communities in East New Britain. By working together to locate and dispose of explosive remnants of war, we are taking practical steps to safeguard current and future generations.
Last week the multinational party arrived in East New Britain to begin the operation, with personnel from PNG, Australia and partner nations working together under the leadership of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in close partnership with the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) across the Gazelle, Kokopo and Rabaul Districts.
Operation Render Safe also builds stronger teamwork and capability building between PNGDF and ADF, as well as partner nations. Defence force specialist roles are working together as integrated teams, sharing skills and experience to improve readiness for future operations. Additional activities, such as a clean-up day, have been included in supporting the local community.
Australia is proud to work side by side and step by step in close partnership with PNG, helping create a safer future for East New Britain and the wider region.
