Representatives from the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea (PNG), alongside sport administration experts from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, visited Unagi Oval recently to witness grassroots rugby league in action through the Stanley Olo League Agencies competition.
The competition is supported through a community sports grant under the Pilai Long Stap Wantaim (Play for Unity) Fund, delivered by Team Up — Australia’s sport for development program in the Asia-Pacific. The Fund attracted over 100 applications, with 23 initiatives selected to receive funding.
The Stanley Olo League Agencies & Academy is a modified rugby league competition for boys and girls under the age of 14, providing structured opportunities for young people to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment. Beyond sport, the program promotes discipline, teamwork, mentorship, and positive life choices, helping young participants build confidence while staying engaged in constructive activities.
Australian High Commission representatives praised the energy, enthusiasm, and emerging talent on display, noting the strong community leadership behind the initiative. Programs like the Stanley Olo Junior League highlight the role sport can play in strengthening communities and creating pathways for young people.
Founder and Program Coordinator Mr Stanley Olo said: “I am proud to give back to my community by creating positive opportunities for these children. We are helping boys and girls develop their rugby skills, build confidence and stay disciplined. I am especially proud to see more girls participating, and inspiring others to join. I thank the Australian Government for providing the grant support helping us invest in the next generation of Papua New Guineans.”
He remains committed to creating meaningful pathways for young people and giving back to the community through sport. Mr Olo also extended his sincere appreciation to Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League Community Rugby League, for their ongoing guidance, encouragement, and commitment to grassroots rugby league development.
The visit also highlighted the increasing participation of girls in rugby league, an encouraging sign of growing inclusivity in community sport.
