Communities in South Fly District will create new livelihood opportunities and strengthen local development with 3 new sawmills delivered through a competitive grants process under the PNG-Australia Partnership.
The sawmills in Mata-Garaita, Weam and Wando were procured in direct response locally identified priorities, including the need to produce timber to refurbish schools, churches and health facilities while also creating income-generating opportunities in remote areas of Western Province.
The Western Provincial Administration funded 7 per cent of the required 10 per cent community contribution, demonstrating strong government support, after Morehead Local-level Government leadership endorsed the grant application.
“This project is an important investment for the people of Wando, and I encourage the community to take full ownership of the sawmill and manage it well, so it continues to benefit everyone for years to come,” said South Fly District MP and Minister for Livestock, Sekie Agisa.
“These sawmills are a great example of what happens when we work together, in this case in close collaboration with the Western Provincial Administration, the South Fly District Administration, and local communities,” said the Australian High Commission’s acting Minister-Counsellor, Mr Craig Gillies.
Skills development for young people is a key focus of the initiative. Local operators have been nominated to undertake practical sawmill training covering machine operation, basic maintenance, and safety procedures. Standard personal protective equipment will also be provided to support safe operations.
The management of the sawmills will be overseen by local committees together with ward development staff. Communities have also constructed storage spaces to protect the equipment and support their long-term use.
Support for the sawmills builds on the broader PNG-Australia Partnership commitment to strengthen economic development, community resilience, and local leadership in Western Province.
