Communities along the Kokoda Highway in Oro Province are a step closer to improved transport access.
Through the PNG-Australia Partnership, the Department of Works and Highways (DoWH) together with the Oro Provincial Government and the Australian Government marked the commencement of the Kokoda Highway Scoping Study Project along a 42-kilometre section from Embara Bridge to Fala Bridge.
The Kokoda Highway is a vital transport link connecting communities to markets, health care and education, while also supporting Oro’s tourism industry through the internationally recognised Kokoda Trail.
Australia is funding a study to assess the costs, risks and best delivery option for sealing works. It will provide environmental information needed to guide future investment decisions and ensure upgrades are cost-effective, resilient and deliver lasting community benefits.
A key component of the project is strengthening the capacity of engineers from DoWH and the Oro Provincial Government through technical support, skills development and hands-on collaboration with specialist consultants.
While the study looks ahead, through Transport Sector Support Program (TSSP), Australia continues to work with DoWH and the Oro Provincial Government on routine maintenance, addressing access constraints to ensure essential connectivity while long-term sealing options are assessed.
Together with the Government of PNG, these investments are helping connect communities, strengthen local businesses and tourism, and create opportunities for people living along the Kokoda Highway corridor.
