Australia is proud to support aspiring young dancers through a series of clinics in the lead up to the PNG National Hip Hop Championships and International Workshops 2026, held 16 August in Port Moresby.
The clinics brought together PNG’s 2 times World Hip Hop Dance Championship winners, Wan Squad, and Australian hip-hop dance crew, Bloodline, for a series of events, workshops and performances providing opportunities for young people to develop their talents and connect through the performing arts.
More than 70 dancers took part in the international dance workshops with some competing in the PNG National Dance Championships.
Australian High Commission Minister-Counsellor Ms Elizabeth Le Bas presented the best female and male dancers with the Faia Haus Moni Moves award at the Championships. The best male award went to Oala Toua from Bounce Unit and best female to Barbra Ali from Strikers Juniors.
Ms Le Bas highlighted how the international workshops demonstrated the contemporary cultural relationship,and showed how dance continues to be a powerful way to connect young people across our region.
“Australia and Papua New Guinea share a strong friendship, and programs like this show how creativity and culture can strengthen the connections between our people, especially young people. This initiative promotes youth empowerment, professional development and shared values while strengthening regional relationships between PNG and Australia,” she said.
Mr Pyan Ng, Wan Squad’s Creative Director said the program will create opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop new skills and explore pathways into creative industries.
“Workshops like these are about much more than learning choreography. They give young people in PNG the opportunity to learn directly from international artists, challenge themselves, build confidence and see what is possible through dance. For us, it’s about creating positive spaces where young people can connect, develop their skills and be inspired to pursue their passion,” he said.
Mr Hilary Stowers, Director of Bloodline Dance company, said last year’s event was one of the highlights of their year and working with Wan Squad is very special.
“We truly believe there are many more champions waiting to emerge within the PNG dance community. With the right guidance, opportunities, and purpose, the potential is limitless. We’re grateful to play a small part in that journey and are excited to continue pouring into this community for as long as we can.”
The PNG National Hip Hop Championships and International Workshops took place 14-16 August in Port Moresby.
