Australia has joined in the celebrations of the Coming of the Light in Western Province, marking the 155th anniversary of Christianity's arrival in Papua New Guinea.
An event was held at the waterfront of old Mawata, Forecoast LLG, South Fly District, commemorating the arrival of Christianity and its lasting impact on Papua New Guinean society.
Hosted by the United Church Western Region, the celebration saw church leaders, community representatives, and Australian High Commission officials joining Hon. Rev. Tiati Kelly, President of Forecoast LLG, and Bishop Rev. Saika Aragu to mark the occasion.
It recognised the contribution of early missionaries, who helped establish some of Papua New Guinea's first schools and health services, and the ongoing role of the church in helping to bring services to the people of Papua New Guinea.
The celebration also highlighted the strong partnership between Australia and Papua New Guinea's churches. Through the Australian Government-funded Church Partnership Program, Papua New Guinea's seven mainline churches, including the United Church, receive support to deliver services in health, education, peacebuilding, and social inclusion.
Bishop Rev. Saika Aragu welcomed Australia’s participation in the celebrations, saying, “Australia is a long-term partner supporting the work of Papua New Guinea’s Churches. They share our values of compassion and service, and Australian support helps us deliver vital work that transform’s people’s lives.”
An Australian government spokesperson attending the event said it was a great honour to join the people of Western Province in this significant event and celebration of faith.
