More than sixty newly graduated Australia Awards alumni have returned to Papua New Guinea equipped with skills, networks and global perspectives to contribute to national development.
The group were welcomed home this week at a series of events in Port Moresby, including a networking event. The scholars have returned from 16 Australian universities, having completed studies in public policy, health, law, engineering, information technology, environmental management and governance.
Over half of the cohort are women, which includes five PhD graduates.
Speaking at the Australia Awards Re-engagement Networking Breakfast, Deputy Prime Minister Rosso congratulated the graduates on their achievement and encouraged them to apply their knowledge and skills to support PNG's development priorities.
“Papua New Guinea needs people who are prepared not only to identify our challenges, but to help solve them, and seize the limitless opportunities our country has ahead of it,” Deputy Prime Minister Rosso said.
“Together, you are the next wave of thinkers, innovators and changemakers who will shape PNG's path toward its next 50 years of independence. What matters now is how you use what you have learned to make a difference for Papua New Guinea.”
The Deputy Prime Minister also acknowledged the longstanding education partnership between PNG and Australia, thanking the Australian Government for continuing to provide opportunities for Papua New Guineans through Australia Awards and other scholarship programs.
Acting Australian High Commissioner Mr Adrian Lochrin highlighted the long-term value of investing in people and emphasised Alumni as a symbol of the strong partnership between PNG and Australia.
“Australia's partnership with PNG through Australia Awards is not only about academic qualifications, but about supporting graduates to translate knowledge into action, strengthen institutions, improve service delivery and contribute to inclusive economic growth when they return home,” he said.
“Alumni have and continue to play a critical role in PNG’s development and are a living symbol of the alliance and close partnership PNG and Australia share.”
They join more than 7,000 Australia Awards and Australian university alumni whose expertise and leadership are contributing to PNG’s development.
Through Australia Awards, both countries continue to build skills, leadership and connections that support inclusive growth, stronger institutions and a prosperous future for PNG.
