Emerging and established media professionals from across Papua New Guinea recently participated in an intensive Sports Commentary and Gender Equity Training program. The initiative was supported by the Australian Government through the PNGAus Partnership and delivered by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Media Development Initiative, in collaboration with the Women in News and Sport program.
The training aimed to strengthen the quality, reach and inclusiveness of sports coverage across PNG.
Participants from a wide range of media organisations, including EMTV, NBC, TVWAN, Kalang Advertising and the National newspaper, took part in the training, building practical skills in live commentary, interviewing and inclusive sports reporting.
The training combined hands-on commentary practice with guidance on preparation, storytelling and audience engagement, including learning how to structure coverage, analyse games, and deliver accurate, entertaining commentary.
A strong emphasis was placed on improving the visibility and representation of women in sport. Sessions explored the power and potential of women’s sport, practical guidelines for fair and balanced reporting, and the role media plays in addressing inequality and violence against women.
Media training was also provided to 12 female rugby league players from PNGRFL to improve interview techniques and help them communicate more effectively.
The training highlights Australia’s continued support for PNG sports and media sector building on our strong and ongoing commitment to sport at all levels, from Australian funded initiatives such as the establishment of the PNG Chiefs, the Pacific Rugby League Partnership, the high performance PacificAus Sports program and community-based programs like Team Up and the Pilai Long Stap Wantaim (Play for Unity) fund. It also builds on more than two decades of collaboration under the PNG–Australia Partnership to strengthen the media sector by enhancing journalism skills, supporting media organisations, and improving access to accurate and independent information.
Australia’s investment in media training complements broader cooperation under the PNG–Australia Partnership, which spans education, governance, economic growth, and community development.
