The Australian High Commission Social Club, with the generous support of businesses in Port Moresby and Black Swan International, has rallied behind the City Mission’s Haus Ruth Crisis Centre for Abused Women and Children, in its major biennial fundraising drive.
Two cheques totalling K35,000 were presented to the Crisis Centre, one for K20,000 raised at the Australian High Commission Social Club Charity Ball through ticket sales, raffles and auctions, and a generous donation of K15,000 from Black Swan International.
Australian Consul-General and Vice-President of the Australian High Commission Social Club, Jo Stevens, was pleased with the amount raised in support of the important work of Haus Ruth.
“The Australian High Commission extends its thanks to individuals and businesses who enthusiastically supported this fundraising event.
“Haus Ruth’s transitional housing facility provides a safe haven, assistance and counselling to women and children who are survivors of gender-based violence,” Ms Stevens said.
The centre accommodates up to 80 women and children per night and serves up to 177 meals each day.
All proceeds from the charity ball will go towards assisting the City Mission to meet its operational costs and supporting the rollout of their programs in Port Moresby and Lae.
The Australian Government also continues to support City Mission’s New Life Training Centre programs in Port Moresby and Lae through the Papua New Guinea-Australia partnership. The programs include life skills, literacy and numeracy skills, and vocational training, such as carpentry, welding and farming skills, for at-risk youth. Australia’s support has also enabled the recent expansion of the youth program to Madang.
