District Court Services to Undergo Reform

The Magisterial Services has launched the Transforming District Courts Business Plan and the District Court Officers Procedures Manual, designed to improve the standard of District Court services in Papua New Guinea.

The documents were officially launched by the Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Davis Steven, during the recent Senior Provincial Magistrates Conference in Port Moresby.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Magistrate Nerrie Eliakim called on law enforcement agencies to support efforts such as this that are aimed at improving the justice system. “The District Court Officers Procedures Manual   provides step-by-step instructions on court processes and procedures, ensuring a consistent approach to service delivery by the 89 District Courts around the country,” Ms Eliakim said.

Minister Davis further emphasized the importance of collaboration saying, “When all agencies work together we will see an increase in the number of cases being resolved in court and improved quality of court services at the district level.”

Representing the Australian High Commission, Minister Counsellor Andrew Egan said, “These documents serve as a platform to raise the District Court Services to a new level.”

Initiatives under the Transforming District Court Business Plan are being developed and implemented with the support of the Australian Government.
