Handover of building set to improve community services in Manus

Community facilities for the people of Manus have been given a substantial boost following the handover of the temporary Manus police station to the Provincial Administration for community use.

The facility was formally transferred following completion of the new Manus Provincial Police Headquarters and Police Station, which began operations earlier this year.

Acting Manus Deputy Provincial Administrator, Jones Bernard, said the facility is an important resource for the community, and can also be used as a venue for activities to support businesses to grow and expand their markets.

“The facility is an asset for the Manus community and will support community services, including sport and other recreational initiatives, especially for young people,” Mr Bernard said.

The police had built and used the building while they waited for a new police station to be completed, replacing the old station in Lorengau, which had stood for more than 40 years and was no longer fit for use.

Manus Provincial Police Commander David Yapu said the building served as an important base for local police during the 18 months they occupied it, and was now better positioned to continue to serve the people of Manus.

The building was funded by the Australian Government through the Justice Services and Stability for Development Program.
