Public Solicitor's Office Legal Library upgrade

Lawyers in Papua New Guinea now have access to much needed resources to help them deliver effective legal services, following an upgrade to the law library at the Public Solicitor’s Office (PSO).

More than 350 books have been added to the library catalogue, which was last updated in the early 1990s. The addition of contemporary family law texts and law reports covering recent developments in common law will support public advocates to better prepare and argue legal cases.

Legal officer Jermah Kambao, who specialises in human rights law, said the expansion of the library’s resources was greatly appreciated by lawyers at the PSO who until now, have had limited access to many aspects of the law. “The library is good when we are dealing with cases where it’s a developing area of law, and for looking at case law offshore,” Ms Kambao said.

PSO provides legal representation across the country to almost all accused persons charged with serious crimes and offences, together with a wide range of legal assistance including civil, family and human rights law and compensations matters.

The upgrade of the library forms part of the PSO Lawyers Continuing Professional Development and Organisational Reform Programs and was funded by the Australian Government through the Justice Services and Stability for Development Program.
